House System

Our House System and Spirit

At The Gatwick School, being part of our community means being a member of a supportive, inclusive, and nurturing environment where everyone is valued. Our mantra, "Two small schools, one big family," captures the essence of what it means to be a part of The Gatwick School family. Although we operate as two distinct phases – one for Primary students and one for Secondary students – we are united by our shared values, goals, and a commitment to each other's success. Our House system plays a vital role in fostering this sense of belonging and unity, ensuring that every student feels connected, supported, and inspired to contribute positively to the school community.

At The Gatwick School, we believe that fostering a sense of community, teamwork, and healthy competition is essential for the personal and social development of our students. With Houses spanning Reception to Year 11, students are assigned to one of four distinct Houses, each named to reflect a unique area of contribution to society. These Houses are: Global Change, Sports & Performance, The Arts, and Charitable Impact.

Each House is inspired by both a living gamechanger and a past gamechanger, whose remarkable contributions to their fields serve as a source of inspiration for our students. These figures were chosen not only for their achievements but also for their values, leadership, and the positive impact they have had on the world. Our House system aligns closely with the school’s core values of Choices, Chances, and Culture, encouraging students to make informed choices, seize opportunities for personal growth, and celebrate the diversity of cultures and perspectives within our school community. Below is a closer look at each of our Houses and the game changing figures that represent them. Each House is for everyone; however, students generally apply for Houses based on their interests and passions.

Promoting Inter-House Spirit

Our House system is more than just a way to organise students; it's a vibrant part of school life that brings everyone together. Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to earn points for their Houses through academic achievements, participation in extracurricular activities, and demonstrating the school’s core values of Choices, Chances, and Culture. Whether it's through the thoughtful Choices they make, the Chances they take to improve and grow, or the celebration of diverse Culture within the school, students contribute to the spirit and success of their Houses.

Regular inter-House competitions are held in a variety of areas, including sports, arts, and academic challenges. These events foster a sense of friendly rivalry and teamwork, as students collaborate with their peers to achieve success. Our termly Enrichment Days are a highlight of the school calendar, with students coming together in a day full of fun activities, performances, and charity drives, all designed to celebrate the unique strengths of each House. Throughout the year TGS will be raising money for a variety of different charities and each house will have a specific charity they are raising money for which were voted for by the students and are listed below:

Global Change – Water Aid

The Arts – Art Refugee

Sports and Performance – Sport in Mind

Charitable Impact – Save the Children

By participating in the House system, our students learn valuable life skills such as leadership, cooperation, and empathy. They are encouraged to take pride in their House, support their fellow members, and contribute to the overall spirit and community of our school. Together, we strive to honour the legacies of our House gamechangers and live by our school’s values, making informed Choices, embracing new Chances, and celebrating the rich Culture that makes our school unique.
