Primary history at The Gatwick School ensures children leave Year 6 with substantive knowledge of British history from the Stone Age to the present day, helping to create a smooth transition into Key Stage 3, where children build upon this knowledge to further their understanding of historical concepts (disciplinary knowledge).
We are ambitious with our primary history curriculum, using concepts such as ‘change and continuity’, ‘cause and effect’, ‘similarity and difference’, ‘interpretation’ and ‘significance’, from Year 1 through to Year 6.
Further to learning one British history topic, primary children each year also learn one world and one local history topic. Our local history studies, in the summer term, link perfectly with our geography topics and school trips.
Our Early Years teachers prepare children for history learning in Key Stage 1 by ensuring children meet Understanding the World objectives and by teaching necessary vocabulary.
