At The Gatwick School we teach children to write narratives, non narrative texts, and some forms of poetry using some of the principles of “Talk for Writing” from Pie Corbett.
A key feature of Talk for Writing is that children internalise the language structures needed to write through 'talking the text', as well as close reading. Children plan, write, edit and then finally 'publish' their work in every unit, with increasing independence.
Students are supported to make rapid progress, and are challenged to master transcriptional skills (handwriting, spelling, punctuation) and improve their composition (language devices, purpose, plot, character, setting)
"I love planning my paragraphs, it helps me with my writing, and the actions help me to remember the text."
"I love writing because I have improved and I get lots of help and I've loved the stories this year."
"The teachers help us develop quickly in writing lessons."
"I love that I can be creative in writing and I have improved every lesson."
Writing is taught in a three-week cycle. A typical three-week unit will look like:
Narrative/ Non-narrative | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday |
Imitate | Learn the text and vocabulary Box it up Build Toolkit of associated skills and devices | Planning for imitate
| Write paragraph one | Edit and improve paragraph one Write paragraph two | Edit and improve paragraph two Write paragraph three |
Innovate | Planning for innovate | Write paragraph one | Edit and improve paragraph one Write paragraph two | Edit and improve paragraph two Write paragraph three | Edit and improve paragraph three Extended Write |
Invent | Planning for invent | Write paragraph one | Edit and improve paragraph one Write paragraph two | Edit and improve paragraph two Write paragraph three | Edit and improve paragraph three Extended Write |
Students’ writing is assessed within the lessons against the learning objectives and age related expectations. At the end of each term, teachers submit an overall assessment of the child’s attainment against the learning objectives taught so far by teacher judgement. Writing is formally assessed and moderated by teachers using the Teacher Assessment Framework at the end of Key Stage 1 and 2.
